35Planning& Collection of Props and costume

The reason of choice for each prop and why it matches with the chosen character:451ee78aa904db4519959bd16497b54f

  • Gun: The gun is supposed to be the prop of the detective and the villain as the detective requires a weapon to fight for justice for the police, the kidnapper in fact has one for crime.
  • Cigarettes: Smoking was a very stereotypical habit in 1940-50 and was represented in Film Noir films as well as in Neo-Film Noir. The detective, his girlfriend and the kidnapper are smokers in our Film Noir opening sequence which gets clearly represented in some scenes to deliver the full 1940-50´s atmosphere.
  • Alcohol/Whiskey: Also a common thing in romantic moment such as wine. Whiskey or other heavier alcoholic drinks are more known to be consumed in fairly more serious moments. E.g. The detective could hold a glass of whiskey in his hand to show that he is worrying, sad or/and angry sitting in his sofa thinking about his kidnapped(possibly dead) girlfriend.
  • Wine: A very romantic indicator as it represents love. In this case we are using this particular prop in the very first scene when the detective and his girlfriend are dancing together to create a positive atmosphere and make as stereotypical as possible according to Film Noir.

Costume design:

We chose this particular costume because the black tie, black blazer, black trouser and white shirt clearly makes the villain look accordingly sinister. It would fit perfectly to our Film Noir opening sequence and would clearly satisfy the wants we want make the viewer to perceive.

The dress of the girlfriend/wife of the detective. The dress needs to be as formal as possible to make wealth and sexuality of her visible as the evening their are dancing should be the very special moment in the detective life which make him thing of year in the flashback when he is sitting in his sofa.

The reason, we chose the beige suit with the hat black/blue tie and the white pale blue shirt is that it matches as a detective at that particular time in the 1940-50s and is perfect to use in our Film Noir genre opening sequence. Despite the limited range of just two colours (black& white) which disables the visibility of all the blueish, beige colours, it will be still brighter and lighter than the villains costume to make the detective seem as a more important character in the opening sequence.

29 Planning of Sound Film Noir Opening Sequence

http://freeplaymusic.com/volumedetail.aspx?volume=1602

This link is the link of the site of the freeplaymusic, we used as a soundtrack for the romantic scene at the very beginning of the opening sequence when the detective is dancing with his girlfriend. We chose this particular soundtrack because it fits the most and creates the most romantic atmosphere.

We chose the pistol shot because it would create tension and make it more interesting. The transition of the scenes from romantic flash back to the scene where the detective thoughtfully sits on his sofa. The shot makes the viewer understand the opening sequence and makes them understand the main content more.

A few seconds after the frame turns black the detective on the sofa appears, that is the moment when the music starts playing. We chose this particular song because it fits into this scene and creates a mysterious, vintage, dramatic as well as as impulsively interesting atmosphere.

The natural/organic soundtrack in the back round which plays in the same time as the jazz music plays purpose is to create an even more mysterious mood as it simulates the outside natural sound to make it more realistic an according to the location in this case on the streets.

This is the soundtrack playing at the very last scenes, the very end of the film noir opening sequence. This particular soundtrack fits perfectly to the scene with the villain waiting for the detective to come for him in his cellar. The reason for this choice is because the sound of it is very calm and mysterious as well.

25Storyline of Film

Story line-Instruction

  1. An ash tray will be the first object seen in the first shot from a close distance.
  2. The cigarette gets put off and pressed into the ash tray so smoke can be seen.
  3. As soon as the cigarette gets in contact with the ash tray the name of the film appears at the right bottom corner in the frame.
  4. Woman walks slowly with a glass of wine towards the detective.
  5. A slow and romantic jazz music provides the expression of a romanic atmosphere as the detective and the woman are dancing and hugging each other.
  6. After this positive and bright moment in this scene, all disappears and turns to a pitch black background with the music fading out.
  7. In the next scene, the music disappears completely and the first object which will be immediately seen is a glass of whiskey which is going to be held by the detective who is thoughfully sitting in his couch.
  8. The detective sits on the couch for a moment and then reaches his hand out to grab the newspapers/magazine with his girlfriend on the cover which headline says “Tragedy”.
  9. After the detective got up he slowly grabs his hat and opens the door to leave.
  10. Once he got outside on the streets, he walks off down a minimally inclined hill which is taken as an extreme-long shot.
  11. At the horizon of the hill a cigarette can be seen on the ground from a very close distance with the detective walking further and further away in the background to create a slight mysterious atmosphere.
  12. In the next scene a pitch- black dark room with a the villain (kidnapped detectives girlfriend) standing in mellow light in front of a table with a gun, pack of cigarettes and newspaper articles about his criminal records.
  13. In the same time the detective has found his location and is standing not far away behind him with the detective shadow falling onto furthest wall.
  14. Thats the moment when the kidnapper hears him and realizes that someone is in the room.
  15. The villains reaction to this situation was quite scared but expected.

Lighting

The colour of our film is going to be black and white.

We are going to film a part of the film by using the 3 point lighing technique which will be indoors only.

The lighting in some scenes like e.g. when the detective meet the girl for the first time, is going to be lighter. Romance and some crime scenes will be darker and more low key to express a mystirial atmosphere.

Low key scenes are going to happen indoors only as the surrounding light will fill in the shadows.

Props

The film will be filmed in typical alley where the lighting can be set up as easy as possible but still express a film noir atmosphere of romance and crime.

Opening sequence of the film

The opening sequence should be filmed/edited with short scenes as film noir openings usually don´t consist of dynamic scenes. We want to create a romantic opening scene to produce and express a film noir atmosphere.
